THE RIGHT WAY TO TREAT A NOSEBLEED

If you’re on blood thinners or your nose won’t stop bleeding, you need to see a doctor. If you just have a run-of-the-mill nosebleed, follow these tips:

      • Don’t tilt your head back.
This is a common misconception. Instead, you need to sit up straight, lean forward and pinch your nose for about five minutes. If you unpinch and it keeps bleeding, assume the position again.
      • Don’t blow it.
If the bleeding stops, try not to blow your nose for a few hours after—that could make it bleed again. Instead, keep your head higher than your heart and use a nasal decongestant. If the bleeding does start up again, however, blowing your nose could help remove any dried blood: remember to pinch and lean forward again for another 5–10 minutes.
